Emergency Contacts

The Counselling Service is not an emergency service

If you don't know where to turn in an emergency or out of hours, here are a number of options:

  • Many Colleges have Porters' Lodges that are staffed 24 hours a day.
  • Many Colleges have a Tutorial system with a tutor on call.
  • You might contact a friend, neighbour or family member.
  • Contact your GP. Outside normal surgery hours, the Urgent Care Cambridgeshire service is available - see below.
  • The self-help information on this website may have useful information. See the links on the left.

Please note that if you want to contact the Counselling Service quickly or in an emergency, email is not an appropriate way of getting in touch, as it may be some time before it is read.  At times when we are open, it is much better to phone:

Other Useful Contact Details

NHS 111

In England call 111 for 24-hour emergency medical advice and information. It provides 24-hour access, seven days a week, 365 days a year, to mental health care, advice and support.

First Response Service

From September 2016, a new urgent mental health service is available in Cambridge for anyone, of any age. You can now call 111, select option 2 and speak to a mental health professional 24/7.

This NHS service can offer urgent and timely support for people in mental health or emotional crisis.

A specialist healthcare professional, 'First Responder' will talk to you and assess your needs.  Someone may come out to see you or arrange for you to go to The Sanctuary (open 6pm-1am, 7 days a week) which is a safe place providing support for people in crisis.

Please note that all medical emergencies still need to attend A&E at Addenbroke's Hospital.
